Sociology has been a
popular choice of optional subject among IAS aspirants and this could be
attributed to the reason that there is no need for any specific academic
background to learn Sociology for the Mains Examination. It is possible to
score high sans any prior knowledge of Sociology provided a candidate follows a
disciplined study plan accompanied by effective answer writing sessions.
It is essential to master
the basic concepts of Sociology and learn from selected sources instead of
reading from a variety of study material. Many of the elements in Sociology are
interlinked with one another and it is imperative to understand those links
under proper guidance. Paper I of Sociology could be termed as the Paper of
Philosophers as it mostly constitutes questions about Karl Marx, Talcott
Parsons, Mead, R.K. Merton, Max Weber and Emile Durkheim. Paper I of Sociology
is highly theoretical in nature and not a lot of information can be included
from current affairs.
Paper II of Sociology
focuses on the Sociology of India and there are many opportunities to add real
life examples from our society while answering this paper. According to Dr. Garima
Mittal (AIR 8 – CSE 2009), it would help a candidate to a great extent if he or
she reads both the Yojana and Kurukshetra in detail as it covers the issues of
rural India which is an important aspect of our society.
In the video titled “IAS preparation to Crack the UPSC
Examinations : Part 31 - Sociology tips by Neha Jain (AIR 12)” conceptualised
by Dr. Roman Saini, Ms. Neha Jain (AIR 12) elaborates on why she chose to
pursue Sociology optional for the Mains Examination. She also gives extensive
details about the major sources of study for Sociology optional, role of
coaching, problems faced during the preparation of Sociology optional and answer
writing

read HARALAMBOS and HEALD 100 pages, but the confusion remains that why am I reading this when every example that was quoted in it alongwith the research done upon belongs either to european or to american society. so, my doubt is- would we be quoting examples and research done on foreign society,is that right, won't the UPSC demands Indian society related quotes?
ReplyDeleteGood question brother. Crores of Indian students are in search of the answer to this question.
DeleteHi, guys . I think that one should remember that the book by Harlombos is useful for Paper 1 of Sociology in UPSC CSE . It covers the thinkers portion and the basic comcepts in Sociology. So , i believe that the answers one has to write can include the examples given in the book. There is no need to worry about the usefulness of examples . What you are worried about is whether the examples from the book would be authentic or not because they are not from Indian sociological context. You need not to worry about that. Those hold importance in Paper 2 and you can very well use the examples as they are to bring clarity to your answer and support your view.
ReplyDeletethanks for this post............
