Public Administration has
always been in the coveted list of scoring optional subjects in the IAS
examination. In CSE 2013, 359 students were selected out of 7077 candidates who
appeared for the Mains Examination which accounts to a success rate of 5.1
percent in Public Administration. The general interest of a candidate in Public
Administration is what matters to obtain a good score which is the case for all
the other optionals. However, there are a few unique characteristics of Public
Administration which need to be scrutinised by a candidate before her or she
opts for the same which are as follows:
- Short and well defined syllabus.
- Easy availability of study material
- Students of Political Science have an edge as Public Administration is a branch of Political Science
- The portion of Indian Administration has links with the constitutional aspects of India (Helpful for Indian Polity – both Preliminary and Main Examination)
- Has advantages while writing the Essay paper as it prepares a candidate to present his/her with a sense of practicality especially for questions concerning topics like District Administration, Local Administration, Indian Law and Order Administration, Administrative Reforms and the role of the Public Sector (Liberalisation) etc.
- Knack for interpreting the questions asked correctly (The difficulty level keeps increasing year after year)
- Ability to interlink concepts
